The Stats are In!

Eli had his one year check up a few days ago, and here are the stats:

weight: 21 1/2 lbs 30th percentile

height: 29 3/5 inches 50th percentile

Not bad for a heart baby, eh?

Eli's CHD: Tricuspid Atresia

Tricuspid Atresia is a defect in the right side of the heart. The Tricuspid Valve does not form, instead there is a wall of tissue. In order for the blue blood to get to the lungs it mixes with the pink blood through defect openings in the heart. Mixed blood goes to the lungs and the rest of the body, which in turn labels the child as a "blue baby."

The First Surgery

Eli had the Pulmonary Artery Band at 5 days old (April 2009). For children who need this surgery it happens within the first 2 weeks of life. Other children need an artificial shunt, and some no surgery at all.

The Second Surgery

Eli had his Glenn Shunt at 4 months old (August 2009). Most have this between 4 to 6 moths of age. They want the child to weigh at least 12 lbs. The child will be very uncomfortable the first 2 or 3 days due to a server headache, so he/she is kept sedated to ease the pain.

The Third, and Final, Surgery

Children typically have the Fontan Procedure between the ages of 2 to 4 years. (Eli was 2 years and 4 months old.) They would like the child to weigh at least 25 lbs. This hospital stay will be longer, but the child will not be as uncomfortable as when he/she had the Glenn Shunt.
